Well today was a bit of a tough one. We departed Esposende for a 23k walk to Viana do Castelo about 8.50am. We had a few stops on the way, but it was hard walking over rough terrain and up and down hills all day. Met some nice people at some of the stops .
We were pretty happy to finally arrive at Viana do Castelo but then realized it was a 3 k walk up a mountain to our accommodation. As we were contemplating the 58 minute struggle , we saw Matthias from Austria sitting outside a church . He told us he was getting a taxi up there and we should get in too. We jumped at it. The hotel is a grand old place and the only disappointment was that our bags weren’t there, and neither was Matt’s.
After some phone calls they were located at another hotel in Viana with a similar name. So we thought we’d go into the lounge bar of this beautiful, grand mansion and have a few beers while we waited . Others dressed nice,y and us in our dusty walking shoes, stinky singlets, t shirts and socks. We certainly lowered the standards.
Bags arrived, went to our rooms then met Mattias in the bar for more drinks and had a chat to Tony and Susie from North Carolina who were doing a driving tour through Portugal. Everything laid for them including sat nav directions each day and which sites to stop at. A tad too contrived for our liking. Lovely people though, he bought a shout of ports and rums after dinner back in the lounge.
To Russell’s mates you can still phone on his mobile (not sure how because he has a different sim). But please remember that we are 9 hours behind Melbourne.
