St.Remy de Provence and Les a Baux de

After a reasonable nights sleep we managed to toast some baguette and top with hard butter, fresh tomatos , salt, pepper, some herbs and balsamic. Washed this down with fresh orange juice and then we motored a short distance to Saint Remy. I reckon my 5th visit to this beautiful Provencial township. The only bad thing about it was that Robert Walls lived here for a year.

It was market day and the place was packed. We followed the “parking 100 meters” sign for about half a mile then drove in and luckily found a space. Then had to get the parking ticket which is like sitting for your year 12 exams. After about 15 minutes the people in front got theirs and it was my turn. Now we’ve done this quite a few times but it never gets any easier. Finally worked it out and trudged up the road about 1/2k to the circular road that runs around the centreville. The streets and lane ways were full of artisans, farmers, gypsys and other traders selling everything you could imagine and everything a French person eats. It’s funny that we recognized quite a few of the stall holders from yesterday in Gordes. Their ability at the end of trading to pack everything up , load it in their white vans and head home setting it all up again the next day in the next market town is incredible. Apart from a T towel the only other thing Russell bought was some madeleines. Did I tell you he liked cakes and sweets?

We walked back to the car and drove to Les Baux. This place has to be seen to be believed. Not sure when it was built but Russell read somewhere about the peasants led by the kings brother,  tried to overthrow the king in 1692. Reminds me of Rodney telling the king in the Wizard of Id “sire the peasants are revolting” . The king replied “yes , they aren’t they”.  Anyway the king and his troops withheld. We took a few photos, mainly of the views , walked around and eventually headed back to L’isle sur La Sorgue . Managed to jag a parking spot right out front of our apartment after 4 laps of the island. Threw our stuff in the digs and scuttled down to one of the local bars and had a few. Walked back, bought a baguette and a tomato for tomorrows brekky, oh and Russell bought an apricot tart . Did I tell you he has a sweet tooth?

Just about to finish this off and head across the road with a few desperados (coronaish beer with tequila added) to watch a few desperados play pétanque. After that our last dinner in L’isle sur La Sorgue . Tomorrow we head to Montpellier .
