San Sebastián . Disney world for adults according to Ross Stephenson.

Lancy and I staggered out of Gijón yesterday and headed for the first Seat dealer we could find so we could get our sat nav to give us instructions rather than make us look at red lines on a freaking map . Well guess what ….. the seat dealer ain’t there no more. The VW dealer next door  was however,  so with a wee bit of coaxing we managed to get 2 of them out to sort out our sat nav. Now it might come as a surprise to many of you, but I’m no frigging  good at technology. It staggered  me that the 2 car salesmen fixed it up but took about a quarter of an hour. Ah technology, dont you just love it.

We hit the road about 11 for the 380k drive to San Sebastián and after a couple of stops for sustenance and petrol arrived about 3.00. Parked the car and strolled off to Pension Alameda, where I’ve stayed a number of times. The lovely Theresa greeted us with a smile and each time I’ve been here her English has improved. It’s olde Worlde in here with the wire doored lift and old fittings in the rooms but it’s in the best location of the Old Town right amongst the Pintxos Bars.

We stowed our bags and went for a wander around the old town streets and alleyways. It was reasonably quiet with just tourists wandering about and many of the shops and bars closed for siesta. Nevertheless we managed to put away a few of the local areas finest frothies and some Pintxos. A  spell back at the Alameda and then back out in the old town around 7.00pm. It was a lot busier and we Pintxos bar hopped and even managed to get a bit of baked cheesecake with Sherry on it from Bar La Vina. Both Russell and I haven’t ever liked cheesecake (sorry Sue) nor Sherry but this is sensational. Not to be missed when in San Sebastián. Met some nice people Katie and George from Bristol and Catriona and Niamh (pronounced Nieve) from Dublin. It was ironic to be able to tell both parties that I’ll be in their cities in Late August with the Blangiardo’s and Staffords. When people hear us talking and they’re English speaking they seem to want to chat. They immediately ask if we’re Aussies and it goes from there. It wasn’t too late before we pulled up stumps but the old town was in full swing. The locals don’t start until late but go through to the wee hours.

Today we will go for a walk to the end of both beaches , bay and ocean, look around the ‘new town’ and settle back for another night on the Pintxos and lunatic soup.
