Vila Praia de Ancora in Portugal to A Guarda in Spain
An interesting day today. Poor old Russell reckons he didn’t get much sleep even with his ear plugs in. I couldn’t hear myself snore so I reckon he made it up. Nonetheless we walked to A Guarda which meant crossing the Minho from Portugal to Spain with a water taxi.
The scenery was mostly beachy followed by some eucalypt forests and after we crossed the Minho we had to climb over a mountain to get to A Guarda. Arrived just around lunchtime and the town was as dead as a dodo.
Checked into our hotel , and, as a special treat, we got Russell his very own room. Just so I don’t have to listen to him whining about my snoring tomorrow morning.
We wandered about the town and finally down to the port area where most of the bars and cafes were closed for siesta. Finally found a place that was open and had an ice cream. While sitting at the port chowing down on our ice creams I learned a lot about Russell’s grasp of basic geography. After contemplating for a few minutes Russell said “I guess this would be the Southern most point of Spain” when I pointed out that the Southern most part of Spain is near the Alborian Sea and we were on the Atlantic he then changed it to the most eastern part. That’s when I knew we did the right thing getting him a separate room tonight. Sleep deprivation isn’t just a torture, it actually sends you loopy.
We walked back towards our accommodation and stopped at a bar for a couple of Estrella Galicias , and received the accompanying tapa with each beer. First were some nice little croquettas with potato and jamon, some peanuts and finally some beautiful green olives. Then headed back to our digs and I reckon Russell will be having a few zzzs . On our way back we tried to use an ATM but the bank had turned it off while they had their siesta. We ran into old mate who told us in very good English where the next atm was. I had to take his pic with Russell because he was like the Shiek from Scrubby Creek. He could fair dinkum eat an apple through a picket fence.
Our Austrian mate Matthias messaged that he has booked us into the towns best restaurant, which is famous for its lobster. I’m tipping it might be an expensive night. Shouldn’t whinge because the Stubbies of Estrella are only 2 Euro at most bars , plus you get tapas.
Tomorrow we have a short walk along the coast to Oia. Not sure what Oia is like but it will be Saturday night here and I expect the towns to be busier.
